“So, was hunky hunk as good in the sack as he looked like he’d be?”

“Better.” Tiffany dropped her purse on the table inside the door of the small apartment she shared with Penny and toed off her shoes. She’d known Penny would want all the details and feeling like she did about Eldon at the moment, she was more than willing to share a few dirty details.

“Wow.” Penny patted the couch beside her where she sat cross-legged, a pizza box resting on her knees. “Come, sit. Tell me everything.”

Tiffany flopped onto the couch, grabbed a piece of pizza and settled back into the soft cushion. “There’s not much to tell,” she mumbled around her first bite. She realized how hungry she was as the zingy taste of the pepperoni and sauce hit her tongue. No wonder. She hadn’t had anything since Eldon had fed her scrambled eggs this morning. She swallowed as a wave of longing washed through her, sending wetness to gather between her legs. Shifting on the couch, she reached for Penny’s soda and took a quick sip to relieve the sudden dryness in her throat. “We fucked and slept and then repeated the process a couple of times and now here I am.”

“Uh-oh,” Penny dropped the half-eaten piece of pizza back into the box and set it on the table. “Was he a complete dick after?”

Tiffany chewed the last bite of her pizza thoughtfully. “A dick?” She shook her head. “Not in a definitive way. I mean, he didn’t throw me out of bed or slam the door in my face.”

“But…” Penny watched her closely and Tiffany couldn’t meet her eyes.

“He disappeared.”

“What do you mean, disappeared?”

Tiffany shrugged, striving for a nonchalance she was far from feeling. “The last time I woke up, I was alone in bed.”

“No note?”

“No…nothing. I guess he just didn’t want the drama of goodbye.”

“That’s really surprising.”

“Why?” Tiffany finally met her friend’s eyes, a curious expression in her own.

“Cause he didn’t seem like an asshole.”

Tiffany chuckled. She could always depend on her friend to lighten a heavy situation. “Dick or asshole, either way, he’s history.”

“And you’re okay with that?”

Tiffany grimaced. “Like everything else in my life so far, I just have to go with the flow. I don’t have a choice.”

“Yes, you do.” Penny shook her head, a determined look in her brown eyes. “You could go back and talk to him. Maybe he had an emergency or something.”

Tiffany stood. “Whatever. There’s no excuse for that kind of behavior. I’m a big girl—in more ways than one—so I’m not going to lower myself and go crawling back to see if he likes me or not. I’m satisfied that we had a one-night stand, or in this case, a one-day stand and now it’s over.”

Penny reached for the pizza and settled back on the couch. “Someday, my friend, you’re going to realize that independent streak of yours will not keep you warm on a long, cold night.”

“That’s okay,” Tiffany replied as she headed toward the bathroom, “that’s why I have an electric blanket.
